OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Deployment Company (“DeployCo”), a majority-owned subsidiary backed by over $4 billion in initial investment and valued at $10 billion pre-money. The venture’s mission is to accelerate enterprise AI adoption by embedding specialized “Forward Deployed Engineers” (FDEs) within client organizations to identify high-impact AI opportunities, redesign workflows, and integrate AI into daily operations.

DeployCo launched with the acquisition of Tomoro, an applied AI consulting and engineering firm, immediately adding approximately 150 experienced deployment specialists to the team. The venture is backed by a coalition of 19 global investment firms and consultancies, with TPG leading the partnership and Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield as co-lead founding partners. Other notable backers include Goldman Sachs, SoftBank Corp., Warburg Pincus, McKinsey & Company, and Capgemini.

The move signals OpenAI’s recognition that building powerful models is only half the equation — the real bottleneck is getting enterprises to actually deploy and operationalize AI at scale. DeployCo aims to bridge that gap with hands-on engineering support rather than just API access and documentation.

Commentary

This is OpenAI’s clearest signal yet that the AI industry is shifting from a “build it and they will come” era to a “we’ll come to you and build it” era. The consulting-firm partnership model — McKinsey, Capgemini, Bain — tells you exactly who the target market is: Fortune 500 enterprises with deep pockets and shallow AI maturity.

The $10 billion valuation for what is essentially an AI consulting shop is eye-watering, but it reflects the reality that most large organizations are sitting on AI investments they can’t operationalize. Whether FDEs can solve the cultural and organizational barriers to AI adoption — not just the technical ones — remains the billion-dollar question. Still, this is a savvy move: OpenAI captures more of the value chain and creates stickier enterprise relationships than API revenue alone ever could.
