SANS NewsBites’ October 13 issue highlights reporting that a Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-0257, has been exploited by ransomware operators. The report is a reminder that remote-access infrastructure belongs at the front of vulnerability-management queues when exploitation is reported.
Public reporting can evolve quickly, so defenders should confirm product applicability, affected versions, and vendor guidance before making change decisions. That does not remove the need for immediate exposure assessment.
Defensive actions
- Identify all GlobalProtect and related Palo Alto remote-access deployments, especially internet-facing instances.
- Check vendor advisories for fixed releases and mitigation guidance, then apply emergency patching where applicable.
- Review authentication, VPN, firewall, and endpoint telemetry for suspicious activity around exposed appliances.
- Restrict administrative access and validate backup and recovery procedures while investigation and patching proceed.
Teams should use the manufacturer’s advisory as the authoritative source for technical remediation.
