Apple announced “Siri AI” at WWDC 2026 on June 8, representing a complete ground-up rebuild of its voice assistant. Powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence and built in conjunction with Google’s Gemini AI platform, Siri AI is designed to be profoundly more conversational, context-aware, and capable of handling complex multi-step tasks across the Apple ecosystem.

The new assistant can understand on-screen content, maintain context across conversations, retrieve information from personal messages, emails, and photos, and perform multi-step actions across applications. Siri AI also includes a dedicated standalone app for revisiting conversations, expanded Visual Intelligence features, and integrated writing tools. It will ship as part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27 — available now for developer testing, with a public beta expected later this year in English initially.

Apple emphasized its privacy-first approach, highlighting on-device processing and a “bold new architecture uniquely designed to protect users’ privacy.” Siri AI requires recent hardware — iPhone 16 or later (or iPhone 15 Pro), iPads with M1 or later, and Macs with M1 or later. Notably, Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS/iPadOS due to regulatory constraints, and will not launch in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.

Commentary

This is the Siri moment Apple has needed for years. The old Siri was a punchline — a voice assistant that couldn’t keep up with Google Assistant or Alexa, let alone ChatGPT. Partnering with Google’s Gemini was a pragmatic move: Apple gets world-class AI capabilities without having to build a frontier model from scratch, while maintaining control over the privacy architecture and on-device processing that its users expect.

The real test will be execution. Apple has promised “deeply integrated” AI before. If Siri AI can genuinely chain multi-step actions across apps — booking a restaurant, checking your calendar, texting a friend, and adding it to Maps in one flow — that would be transformative. But the EU and China exclusions reveal the friction between Apple’s AI ambitions and the global regulatory landscape. This will be the defining feature battle of 2027: Apple Intelligence vs. Google Gemini on Android vs. whatever Microsoft ships next.
