Microsoft’s October security release deserves immediate triage. Reporting on the release says it includes a fix for an exploited Windows Shell weakness, CVE-2026-96951, that can bypass Mark of the Web protections. That signal helps flag files obtained from untrusted zones before users open them.

Identify Windows endpoints that receive internet-originated archives, Office documents, installers, or disk images; confirm that the October cumulative updates are deployed; and investigate suspicious files that bypassed normal attachment or download controls. Keep attachment filtering, application control, and user-facing warnings enabled: a patch reduces one avenue rather than removing the need for layered controls.

Use Microsoft’s Security Update Guide for definitive affected-product and update information. Prioritize the exploited issue, then use established risk processes for the remaining fixes.
