Microsoft Launches Copilot Cowork: Agentic AI That Delegates Multi-Step Work

Microsoft has launched Copilot Cowork, a new enterprise AI agent that moves beyond chat-based assistance into genuine task delegation. Announced as part of the Wave 3 Microsoft 365 Copilot rollout, Cowork transforms natural language requests into structured multi-step workflows that execute across Outlook, Teams, Excel, and other M365 services — planning steps, checking in for approval, and running in the background.

Under the hood, Copilot Cowork integrates technology from Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, reflecting Microsoft’s increasingly multi-model AI strategy. It leverages Microsoft’s Work IQ intelligence layer to pull context from emails, meetings, files, and calendars to inform its task execution. The system is currently available in a limited Research Preview to select enterprise customers, with broader access expected through the Frontier program by late March 2026.
